“Dish Night” was one of the strategies that helped movie theaters survive during the Great Depression of the 1930s. One (or sometimes two) nights a week, theaters would give all females, “ladies and girls,” a plate or cup or saucer. Over weeks and months, one could build an entire set of dishes—a sort of Depression-era dowry. The dishes were inexpensive for theaters, and encouraged attendance on slow nights. And because going to the movies is frequently a social event, friends, lovers and spouses followed, making the night even more profitable.
